Switching Video Teams with Mojave (for real this time).
A few years back I was reading that more AMD/ATI cards were becoming more compatible with OS X (now macOS). I had purchased a card but had to return it due to financial difficulties. Now with the recent release of Mojave and the stalling between Apple and Nvidia to allow graphics drivers, I've been tempted to take the plunge into using AMD cards.
I purchased my Dell Latitude E5530 at the beginning of October. Once i finally got OS X Mojave stabilized on it, I tried the same technique on an internal mSATA drive (I used for testing purposes) in my main Hackintosh rig. Problem was that I hadn't noticed that Nvidia drivers were not yet available, so I was stuck. as long as I used internal graphics, i was good. so I ended up making a separate BIOS profile for my main rig so that High Sierra would remain the same using my GTX 970 card with the DisplayPort, but Mojave would use my i5-6500's internal graphics and use HDMI. It worked for a while, but aside from the color scheme I tended to stay with Windows since I was playing a lot of games.
Just this past Christmas I got $130 in eBay gift cards, and Slickdeals.net was showing Asus Radeon RX 570s for $130. I knew that NewEgg was also a seller on eBay but I couldn't find any promos for them, so I started looking at used Radeon RX 570s on eBay. They were about the same price or slightly lower, but I pushed it further and did a search for RX 580s (the next step up). Surprisingly they were about the same price! A few google searches and comparison charts showed me that it outshined my aging GTX 970 and worked with Hackintoshes right out of the box as well. I found a slightly used one for $130 that offered a 14-day return policy (best to look for those that offer returns, as some of us don't have that kind of disposable income to take a chance on) and ended up purchasing that.
Once it arrives and i get it installed I'll post before and after results. I still have an XFX RX 560 i use for my machine at work, but haven't taken the chance on flashing it to a Sapphire-branded one for better OS X compatibility. if I do that I'll just sell off my GTX 970 to compensate for the RX 580 purchase. Stay tuned!
